The union representing 5,300 San Joaquin County employees went on strike late Wednesday night after negotiations with the county again fell through.
Thomas Dewar, a spokesman for the Service Employees International Union chapter 790, said an PM Updatesnown number of workers at San Joaquin General Hospital picketed during the night. He didn't know how many walked off the job this morning.
The union represents the vast majority of county workers, from 911 operators and road crews to hospital workers and human service providers.
They have not reached agreement with the county on health benefits.
Though the union and the county agreed to a contract Saturday, union officials said in a news release that the one they received to sign Tuesday was "startlingly different from the terms agreed upon."
County officials couldn't immediately be reached this morning for estimates on how many workers are out today. The union has scheduled an 11:30 a.m. march through downtown Stockton.
Sheriff's deputies and firefighters belong to different unions and are not expected to strike.
