SHOOTING VICTIM UNDER ARRESTSource: Modesto Bee
Sheriff's deputies arrested a 28-year-old Latino man on suspicion of car theft Wednesday night as he left a local hospital — two days after being shot several times in the neck and chest in south Modesto. The man was shot while riding a bike on Boulder Avenue near Rio Grande Avenue about 4:30 p.m., deputy Royjindar Singh said. Witnesses said two men in a pickup drove alongside him and fired several rounds. Investigators said Wednesday that they believe the men in the truck had been chasing the victim for an extended period. The man is suspected of stealing a '90s-model Mercury Cougar from a Shell station on Crows Landing Road in an attempt to escape his pursuers, Singh said. But the car ran out of gas on Boulder. He then tried to flee on a bicycle; investigators do not know how he got the bike, Singh said. The shooters have not been arrested. The Bee is not identifying the shooting victim because his attackers are at large. Investigators ask anyone with information on Monday's shooting to call Detective Marion Moreno at 567-4475, or CrimeStoppers at 521-4636.
