Peru: Protection for Inca Heritage

Source: Plenglish

Lima, Jul 23 (Prensa Latina) Cusco Culture National Institute is supporting the constitution of a multiple commission to assess the situation of the Inca village and thus create alternatives for its protection.

David Ugarte, director of the Cusco institute, called on the high-ranking Peruvian authorities to take part in the matter as the works expected to carry out in the zone will seriously damage the Peruvian tourism because Machu Picchu is one of the country's greatest attractions.

Meanwhile, a commission of the UN Organization for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO) will visit Peru in late 2006 to verify the implementation of actions to solve the problems affecting the Machu Picchu Archeological Park.

Luis Lumbreras, Peru National Institute director highlighted that after the measures taken to solve specific problems, the UN World Heritage Commission decided not to declare Machu Pichu in danger.

The organism will also verify the actions followed to preserve the village of Chan Chan, seriously affected by underground water filtration, the official confirmed.

Chan Chan is the world's largest clay village and was declared as World Archeological Heritage by the international organism.
